Xperia 1 II camera technology – new photoy Pro for full-scale shooting of the “α” level

The Xperia 1 II 5G smartphone will be released in late May. It is equipped with a wide range of specifications, such as 21:9 organic EL displays and the latest 5G compatible, but it incorporates a lot of technology from Sony’s lens interchangeable camera “α” series, and is characterized by a particular enhancement of camera functions.

Prior to its launch, Sony Mobile Communications held an online briefing explaining the camera features of the Xperia 1 II.

The letter “ZEISS T*” shines on the Xperia 1 II lens. It is a mark that t* coating of Zeiss is given.

Equipped with a long-established Zeiss, a triple camera of sticking to

The camera on the Xperia 1 II is a triple camera called ultra-wide angle, main, and telephoto. In addition, it also has a 3D iToF sensor for positioning distances. First of all, I would like to introduce my commitment to the lens of this camera.

Xperia 1 II’s strength is full-fledged camera performance and operability

The camera is a triple camera and features a further 3D iToF sensor

The lens is powered by the famous German Zeiss lens by Carl Zeiss. Originally, Sony has a track record of adopting zeiss lenses for high-end compact digital cameras such as cybershot and interchangeable lenses for the α series. The Xperia 1 II features a high-precision lens that clears zeiss standards with all three cameras. The image quality is increased.

The main camera sensor is a 1/1.7-inch Exmor RS for mobile sensor. 1.5 times more sensitive photography than Xperia 1.

The pixel pitch of the sensor of 1/1.7 inches 12 million pixels is 1.8 μm, and the reading speed is 10ms. There is a merit that it is possible to do the processing faster such as high-speed AF compared with the multi-pixel sensor of other companies.

What is T* coating? Missing good image quality secrets

By the way, in the example of equipping the Zeiss lens with a smartphone, there was “Nokia 9 PureView”, but the feature of Xperia 1 II which was not in this terminal is T*- teestar coating.

In not only the lens for the camera but also the lens for glasses, a process called the coating which deposits a thin film on the surface is generally done. Normal lenses are designed to deliver light from the lens surface to sensors through various devices such as lens materials, sheets, and shapes. One of the ingenuity is coating.

Speaking of Zeiss lenses, Sony has long used them in the handycam, cybershot and interchangeable lenses. It features a blue ZEISS logo and a red “T*” logo.

The coating, also known as AR-Anti-Reflective coating, is intended to prevent reflection. The aim is to prevent the incident light from reflecting on the lens boundary surface, and to increase the transmittance by minimizing the phenomenon such as ghosting reflections such as light beams, and flare slower contrast when the entire screen turns white.

Lens manufacturers have their own unique technologies, but Zeiss’ T* coatings, which have been researched since the 1930s, have a reputation for faithful color reproduction and a good depiction of omission. It is the Xperia 1 II lens that cleared the standards of such Zeiss. Especially, it seems to be able to expect the image quality improvement in the scene where sunlight and strong lighting are in the screen.

Xperia used the G lens, but the Xperia 1 II now has a Zeiss lens. While there are advantages such as backlight resistance by T* coating, it seems to be positioned as the same row as a lens. It might be a place similar to the relation between g lens and Zeiss lens in the interchangeable lens.
Covers a wide range of zoom areas “pushing to the limit”

The lens is also particular about three types of lenses: 16mm to 35mm format, 24mm and 70mm. It covers the zoom range of the lens called the large three yuan of 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, and the small three yuan which can be said to be a standard of the zoom lens.

There is a digital zoom between them, but the Xperia 1 II style is to switch this to replace the lens and shoot it. F-values are f2.2, F1.7, F2.4, respectively, and not so-called “through”, but it seems to put the power of pushing to the limit in each lens characteristic and setting it as the best setting.

Improved image quality in dark places, and a sense of detail is improved.

The sensors in each camera align the number of pixels, each with approximately 12 million pixels, ultra-wide angle, about 12 million pixels, and about 12 million pixels, about 12 million pixels, and approximately 12 million pixels. The main and ultra wide-angle cameras use dual PD AF sensors, and telephoto cameras are general image-plane phase difference AF. The main and telephoto cameras are equipped with optical image stabilization. In all cameras, it is characterized by corresponding to the pupil AF that follows the eyes of a person or animal autofocus.

Now that we’ve outlined the sensors, let’s take a look at an example. It is a comparison of the image quality of the four corners when shooting in the dark place with the previous model Xperia 1 and Xperia 1 II.[Taken by photo on Xperia 1 II, taken in the photo under and xperia 1]this is the previous model Xperia 1, xperia 1 II is a comparison of the image quality of the four corners at the time of dark shooting. High-speed continuous shooting of 20 frames per second that can take a picture of a horse that turns suddenly

“High speed” is also one of the characteristics of the Xperia 1 II. The two main functions are “20 frames per second in AF/AE follow-up continuous shooting”, and “real-time pupil AF for people and animals” as a high-speed shooting performance that incorporates the technology cultivated in the α series.

In general, the first exposure, fixed to the focus position, and continuous shooting can be taken faster. However, if the subject is moving, the focus position and exposure will not be proper.

On the other hand, it is AF/AE follow-up continuous shooting to focus and expose each piece even in continuous shooting. With high-speed processing with Exmor RS sensor and image processing engine BIONZ X for mobile, xperia 1 II enables AF/AE follow-up continuous shooting of 20 frames in the same second as the α9 II, the top-level model of α.

The horse which turns suddenly is taken perfectly. 60 AF/AE operations per second to achieve 20 frames of AF/AE follow-up continuous shooting per second.

This was achieved by the af and AE arithmetic processing of 60 times per second. Normally, af/AE is performed 30 times a second, but this doubles to 60 times when the shutter button is pressed half way. Three operations per frame are performed by a simple calculation, and AF/AE follows even 20 frames per second. By the way, this high-speed processing is the main camera, and the remaining two cameras are calculated 30 times a second, and af/AE follow-up continuous shooting is 10 frames per second.
I’m good at short-range photography, and I can follow the eyes of a moving cat.

The function which makes use of this high-speed operation is real-time pupil AF. By matching AF with the eyes that are more detailed, rather than face recognition, focus accuracy is further improved.

In the function that is also included in α, Xpeira 1 was only a person, Xperia 1 II also supported the eye AF of animals. It seems to correspond to the animal of the canine family and the feline family, and α is changing the learning data, and it is said that it assumes the shooting scene with the smartphone.

Real-time pupil AF for not only people but also animals

For example, α assumes that you can shoot wild animals in the distance with a telephoto lens, but xperia 1 II is learning to weigh in on short-range photography, such as shooting pets in everyday life. It is also easier to photograph irregularly moving subjects such as children, pet dogs and cats.

Evolved AI recognizes subject smoothly

Xperia 1 II phase difference AF distance range . The focus point is considerably wider at 247 points, which is about four times larger than the Xperia 1, which is called a 70% coverage for the sensor surface.

Wide RANGE OF AF AREAS

In addition to this, it is equipped with a 3D iToF sensor that increases AF accuracy by positioning the distance to the subject. The company used to use laser AF sensors to measure distance, but at that time it was only one point in the center. The Xperia 1 II allows fine positioning of 43,200 points, and the 3D depth map greatly improves AF performance.

The 3D iToF sensor has a wider cover area and distance range.

In addition, it is equipped with an algorithm that recognizes the main subject to be focused by AI. By learning a lot of images, it recognizes the main subject for each scene and sets the AF/AE target. As a result, it seems to be able to avoid the problem such as missing the inside of the focus.

It recognizes the main subject appropriately, and appropriate focusing is done.

New Photoy Pro to xperia as a camera

Now, these camera features can be used in some of the standard camera apps, but in order to use all of them, you will need a new Photography Pro app.

In Japan, it will be available by the post-release update of Xperia 1 II .” Photography Pro is an app that uses a full-fledged camera UI, like the Cinematography Pro app on Xperia 1. Various items can be set manually and taken.

Photoy Pro operation screen. Because there is a physical shutter button (also supports half-press), it is also a feature that there is no shutter icon on the screen.

Key Features of Photography Pro

Photography Pro provides an interface optimized for the smartphone screen while reproducing the alpha screen UI. In addition to various setting changes such as shooting mode, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, white balance, and focus mode, af/AE follow-up of 20 framesFunctions such as photography and pupil AF are also available. “Xperia is one of the imaging products that we want to play a part in the camera that can take full-scale photography,” the company says.

As for ui, it seems to have brushed up repeatedly to dozens of photographers around the world, and place the function to be used frequently in the function area, or put an icon that mimics the shooting dial, such as adjusting the interval until it is taken by pressing the shutter button, it seems to have continued the improvement.

Hearing with professional photographers

The company, which is confident that it has implemented a camera feature that will satisfy alpha users, hopes that the Xperia 1 II Photoy Pro will increase the chance of becoming a camera enthusiast by taking on the challenge of taking a full-fledged camera, and will become a step-up entrance.
