Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone, the P40 series. Last time, we introduced the appearance of the P40 Pro, which is the core model of the P40 series, but this time we will look at the camera functions of the P40 Pro, which is the biggest feature, as of the end of April 2020, the release in Japan has not yet been decided.

The p40 Pro’s main camera is an ultra-wide lens, a wide-angle lens, a 5x telephoto lens, and a depth measurement camera with 4-eye specifications.
The biggest feature of the P series is probably the camera function after all. From the P9 series, which appeared in 2016, we started working with the German camera brand Leica. Since then, the camera function of the P series has been greatly upgraded, such as equipped with multiple lenses and evolving AI processing. And even with the P40 series of cameras, they have evolved further from the previous model.
Among the P40 series, the top model, the P40 Pro+, is a particularly significant evolution of camera capabilities. The p40 Pro+ main camera has a 5-eye specification: an ultra-wide lens, a wide-angle lens, a 3x telephoto lens, a 10x telephoto lens, and a depth measurement camera. This is the first time the P40 Pro+ has been used for the P40 series.
On the other hand, the main camera of the P40 Pro of the medium model which I tried this time is four-eye specification of an ultra-wide lens, a wide-angle lens, a 5x telephoto lens, and a depth measurement camera. This combination is the same as the P30 Pro of the conventional model, the imaging device mounted on each lens is enhanced. The cameras are vertical, with ultra-wide lenses, wide-angle lenses, 5x telephoto lenses, depth measurement cameras and LED flashes, laser sensors and color temperature sensors to the right.

The wide-angle lens with a focal length of 23 mm, an F value of 1.9, and optical image stabilization is a large 1/1.28-inch sensor that is the largest smartphone. The number of pixels is 50 million pixels. In addition, the RYYB specification, which was first adopted in the P30 series, has also been inherited. The P30 Pro was a 1/1.7-inch RYYB sensor with 40 million pixels, so both the sensor size and the number of pixels were enhanced.
In addition, the Octa PD AF function, an 8-pixel autofocus and AF system, is also equipped with a new function. By utilizing eight pixels, which are four times that of dual-pixel AF, it is said to be able to provide high-speed AF even in low-light and dark environments.
The wide-angle lens features a large 50 million pixel sensor of 1/1.28 type. It is also a RYYB specification similar to the P30 series
An ultra-wide-angle lens with a focal length of 18 mm and an F value of 1.8 uses a 40 million pixel sensor of 1/1.54 type. Not only does the number of pixels double compared to the P30 Pro, but the sensor size has also increased in size, and this has also been greatly enhanced.
This ultra-wide-angle lens camera is called the Ultra Wice Cine Camera, and the video shooting function has improved. In addition to shooting 4K60p and 4K HDR videos, 16 pixels of 4×4 is used as 1 pixel, and by supporting ultra-high sensitivity video shooting with ISO sensitivity of up to 51,200, video shooting performance in low-light environments has been improved. It also features a Directional Audio Zoom function that uses three microphones built into the console to zoom in on the sound according to the zoom operation.

A 12 million pixel sensor is used for 5x telephoto lenses with a focal length of 125 mm, an F value of 3.4, and optical image stabilization. While the sensor size of this place is unpublished, it is high pixel from 8 million pixels of P30 Pro. The 5x telephoto lens, like the P30 Pro, is a flexoptical lens that refracts light 90 degrees to deliver to the sensor. The telephoto photography feature is a hybrid zoom that narrows the area of the sensor used for shooting from 5x to 10x, and up to 50x in digital zoom after 10x.
The in-camera mounted on the display surface is similar to the P30 with a 32 million pixel sensor, but the in-camera also supports AF and 4K video shooting. Next to the in-camera is also equipped with an infrared 3D camera that is also used for 3D face recognition. As a result, two types of biometric authentication, such as 3D face authentication and display embedded fingerprint authentication sensor, are available, convenience is increasing.

The camera function of the P series is not only a collaboration with Leica in Germany, but also a variety of AI shooting modes such as scene recognition and night view mode. The P40 Pro also offers a variety of AI shooting modes, although it is no longer as strongly appealing to the keyword AI as it used to be.
For example, automatic scene recognition, night view mode, face recognition, beauty mode, aperture mode to blur the background, etc. are still installed. Then we’ve added a few new features, one of which is the AI Golden Snap.
AI Golden Snap features features such as “AI Best Moment”, which recommends the best cut from consecutive shots when shooting people, “Remove passersby”, and “Remove reflection”, which removes the reflection on the glass surface, etc. to remove the person reflected in the background. Remove passersby and Remove reflection seem to be realized by editing after shooting, but they both seem to be useful.
Unfortunately, the AI Golden Snap hasn’t been implemented as of the end of April, and we haven’t been able to try it out this time. When I contacted Huawei, it was said that it was going to be supported in the upcoming version up, but it was a shame that the camera function of the P40 Pro was also a highlight and could not be tried.

Here are some of the photos you actually took with the P40 Pro. The ai function is enabled for photography, and other settings are taken as standard.
First, check the difference in angle of view for each lens with the rear camera. The picture below was taken from the same location with an ultra-wide lens, a wide angle lens, and a telephoto lens. It can be photographed quite extensively with an ultra-wide lens, and the distortion of the peripheral part is corrected with a good feeling. Not to mention the scenery photograph, it will be active in the commemorative photography in a large number of people. In addition, the telephoto lens is equivalent to five times, it is possible to see a large picture far away.
As for the image quality, I felt that there was no dissatisfaction at all if it was the quality up to here. This is the impression that it is the latest model of p series indeed.
However, if you look at it in detail, the photo taken with a wide-angle lens is a little yellow. Because ryyb sensors are used for wide-angle lenses, it may be difficult to reproduce the color of the RGGB sensor, which is almost the same as the ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses. If possible, I would like you to make adjustments so that you can make the same color even if you shoot with any lens.

Next, i checked telephoto photography. The following photos were taken at 10x telephoto. The 10x telephoto is a hybrid zoom that uses telephoto lenses and narrows the imaging range of the imaging device, but the details are also able to be photographed beautifully without blurring like a digital zoom.
The 10-fold telephoto is a combination of hybrid zoom and digital zoom (up to 50x). The following is a photo taken at 50 times. It’s blurry overall, but you can still read the letters on the sign board, and you can see the leaves and branches of the trees in the background.
In addition, as with the P30 series, there is also a mode for shooting the moon in the night sky. If you capture the moon at 50x telephoto, you can automatically switch to moon shooting mode and take pictures of this beautiful moon. The following example sat with a hand-held tripod without using a tripod. It’s amazing to be able to take pictures of the moon with this much quality on hand.

Shooting dark scenes
Then, it is taking a picture in a dark scene. The first photo is a standard shooting mode, but there is no white light in the light, and there is no such thing as a dark place but nothing can be grasped, and it became a photograph which seems to be a night view really.
The second one was taken in night view mode from the same place, and it is more bright. However, even in the standard shooting mode is sufficient, and the night view photography will be able to correspond only by pressing the shutter.

In addition, the following photograph sat in a very dark room that only the night light was lit at midnight, and was taken using the night view mode. It is a bright photograph as if the lighting of the room is turned on. I am also surprised that the surface of the stuffed animal is reflected in fine detail.

In-camera has evolved, including new autofocus and 4K video recording. However, the basic usability is almost the same as the P30 series. You can adjust how beauty mode works, and take a selfie with a background effect.

Finally, it’s a video. This time, I took a picture day and night in the same place. Both are photographed with hand without using gimbals.
The video taken in the daytime isSmooth video close to the action cam blur is suppressed. On the other hand, the video taken at night becomes a little blurry, and it receives a rough impression overall, but it is indeed that it is possible to take a picture brighter than it looks.

Recent smartphone cameras are remarkable for high performance, and for several years it has been said that compact digital cameras are no longer needed. The lP40 Pro’s camera has enough performance to completely surpass the compact digital camera, and it’s definitely the top class in the current smartphone.
