Domestic airliner crashes near airport in Karachi, Pakistan, May 22, 20:08
According to Pakistani aviation authorities, a domestic airliner crashed in the southern city of Karachi at around half past midnight local time, Japan time. It is not known whether the Japanese were on board.
According to Pakistani aviation authorities, the crash occurred on a Pakistani Airbus A320 aircraft that took off from Lahore in eastern Pakistan and was about to land at the airport in Karachi.
The crash occurred in a residential area of Karachi, and according to local media, the airliner was carrying about 1,000 passengers.
Details of whether there were any injuries are not yet known.
Footage from the scene shows black smoke rising in the sky and a tense car driving down the street, which appears to be an emergency vehicle, as many people go out into the street and make noise.
The Japanese Consulate-General in Karachi is working to confirm whether the Japanese were on board the airliner or if the Japanese were involved in the accident.
