A senior U.S. State Department official, “A very good choice for Japan,” New President Kan of the Liberal Democratic Party September 15, 13:54
A senior U.S. State Department official said the LDP’s new president, Kan, was “a very good choice for Japan” and that he “looks forward to working with the next prime minister” and expressed his hope that the U.S.-Japan alliance would deepen further.
“Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has done a great job in solving very difficult problems,” Mr. Stillwell, who is in charge of East Asia and other areas at the U.S. State Department, said in a conference call Thursday night. The United States highly appreciates the longest tenure as Prime Minister in history,” he said, expressing his appreciation for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s progress in strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance.
On that basis, Kan, who won the LDP presidential election, said, “It was a very good choice for Japan. I look forward to working with the next Prime Minister.”
After re-emphasizing Japan’s position on the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Mr. Stillwell strongly condemned China’s efforts to stimulate activity around the Senkaku Islands, saying, “Even though Japan and the United States have clarified and strengthened our position on the Senkaku Islands, China continues to invade the Senkaku Islands for a long time.”
