Megumi Yokota celebrated her 56th birthday on November 5 after being abducted by North Korea on her way home from school in November 43 years ago when she was in her first year of junior high school.

Sakie prepared a cake every year for Megumi’s birthday and celebrated it with her husband, but this was her first birthday without her husband.

Ms. Sakie said, “Until Megumi was gone, I bought a cake for my birthday, baked a big chicken, and spent a lively time with my family. “It’s my best time to sit around the table,” he said with his sons. On my birthday after I was gone, I always celebrated with my husband with a small cake and coffee, but I’m lonely because I don’t have a husband.”

“When this day comes, I feel really sorry for where and how I’m celebrating my birthday in North Korea, and I’m filled with the feeling, ‘Why can’t I help you?’ Every day I feel like I’m walking in the dark, and once I’m upset, I don’t feel like I can get up any more, but since the Prime Minister has been substituted, I want to expect a little bit of a birthday and have hope. Megumi and her husband’s pictures are always side by side, so I want to say, ‘I’ll be sure to help you.'”
